Outreach and Community Service
At Second Parish, service to our neighbors is part of our covenant. We look for ways we can give back to our community, with particular attention to ways young and old can serve together.
Hingham Food Pantry
As a church, we provide space to the Hingham Food Pantry, which is housed in the lower level of Cushing Hall. On the Sundays before Thanksgiving and Christmas, we help organize the fresh produce distribution to over 175 families served by the Food Pantry. You are welcome to join us in this project, or if you would like more information on the Hingham Food Pantry, you may email them at hinghamfood@gmail.com or call them at 781-740-8180.
Red Cross Blood Drive
Second Parish sponsors an American Red Cross blood drive at least once per year, drawing many members of the community.
Second Sunday Offerings
Another way we give back to our community is through our Second Sunday Offerings. Each second Sunday of the month, our collection is given to a worthy charity. While we attempt to focus our giving on local charities, we have also responded to world-wide natural disasters.
Some of the charities we have supported recently include:
-
Hingham Food Pantry
-
Wellspring Multiservice Center
-
A Bed for Every Child
-
Elizabeth Rose Olsen Foundation
-
Maura’s Hopeful Mission
-
The Friends of the Homeless
-
Domestic Violence Ended (DOVE)
-
Americares
-
Womanade of the South Shore
Veterans' Flag Project
Each May, on the Sunday before Memorial Day Weekend, the congregation meets at the High Street Cemetery for a brief worship service and community service project replacing the flags at the gravestones of those who have served our country.
