Glad Tidings
From the Minister –
My dog Annie and I like to walk on the smaller trails of Wompatuck State Park rather than on the paved roads and paths. At least I think we both prefer the side paths – all I can say for sure is that I prefer them and she runs happily ahead, behind, and alongside me and seems utterly absorbed in the adventure. It’s always comforting to have the park map along and look for the signs identifying intersections between trails so that we know just where we are. But not all of the trails in the park are marked, and some of the signs aren’t where they’re expected, so sometimes we go traipsing farther and longer than we expected when we started out. A year or so ago we followed a trail from Whitney Thayer Woods into Wompatuck and then found ourselves wandering for quite a while with no idea where we would end up, hoping at every turn that something familiar would turn up. Nothing did until we stumbled out onto King St., far from where we’d started or wanted to be.
Back then, I hadn’t quite figured out that it’s useful to have a way to know which way you’re heading; since then I’ve acquired a compass with a GPS system on it. The other day we headed out in the direction we’d gotten lost before. There were some lovely puddles in the path to clear, trees just beginning to show that peculiar redness they manifest just as the buds begin to spring out, and lots and lots of smells (more for Annie than for me). We discovered a magnificent rock formation to stand on and followed what we thought was the path forward into whatever other discoveries lay ahead. It became apparent that there really was no path in any direction, so it was time to turn around. This time, I’d noted with my GPS exactly where we’d come from and the trail back was easy.
I find in other parts of my life that it’s often useful to go off in directions I haven’t completely thought through. “Going out on a limb,” like going off on a trail, tends to be the place where I learn the most. I’ve also learned, though, that it’s a big help to have a compass and a clear bead on where I’ve come from so that, after the adventure, I can come safely back to where I started. – Lessons from Annie
SERVICES – May 1st: Jim Scott, who was the musician at one of our services last year, will be leading the entire service on the first Sunday of May. May 8th: Mothering and Other Mysteries – Mothers can sometimes make it look very easy to juggle too many responsibilities. Today we honor those skills from all of those who care for us. May 15th: Children’s Sunday – Learning from the mouths of babes. May 22nd: Remembering – Our congregation will once again place the flags on the graves of our veterans at the High Street Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day. We will remember those who served their country and all of those others dear to us whom we have lost. May 29th: Stephanie Shute Kelsch will speak of Memorial Day.
In Faith,
Paul

is on Tuesday, May 17, 7:30 p.m. at the home of Nancy Hansberry. We are reading
City of Thieves by David Benioff.
Women’s Supper Group
Sandy Peavey, Sarah Phillips and I have been talking today after church, about starting a Women’s Supper Group along the lines of the Men’s Breakfast, without the cooking. We thought we could meet once a month at different restaurants and talk about whatever comes up. There would be no obligation to come every month, just come when you could. If we know a day in advance, we could choose a destination that could accommodate whatever number of us plan to attend.
If you are interested, please e-mail me at ktdel@comcast.net, or talk to Sandy or Sarah. Let us know what day(s) would be best for you, and we’ll get back to you. We could schedule our first outing at the end of May.
Whether you’re young or not so young, have been around for years or are new to the church community, we hope this idea interests you. Let us know what you think.

55th Annual Art Show, May 5-15 (Opening Reception May 4)
|
|
This year will be the 55th Annual Art Show! The Black Sea Combo will perform and there will be a Wine Tasting Evening.
Many of our favorite artists who have been with us before are back as well as several new artists. Again the Junior Art Show will be lively and dynamic. We have some special events this year.
We are delighted to have the Black Sea Combo perform. This group is led by
jazz trumpeter, Dan Teager, and offers an original blend of Armenian music and
Afro-Cuban Jazz. The Black Sea sound, fast mambo to hard driving blues, is
unique, fun, and loaded with energy. The concert will be Saturday, May 7th
at 3:00 pm followed by a wine and cheese reception. Tickets can be purchased in
advance for $15 and at the door for $20. This event is partially supported by
the Hingham Cultural Council.
On Friday, May 13th, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, we will sponsor a Wine
Tasting Evening provided by Marsh Liquors of Norwell. This will be an
opportunity to taste and learn about some new wines while enjoying the art
show.
We hope that you will join us for the art show, concert, and wine tasting. We look forward to seeing all of you.
We thank all the members and friends who have already signed up to work on this show and encourage all others to join us.
We know we are asking for a lot of assistance. We need help from everyone as this is our biggest fund raiser of the year. It’s a great way to get involved in the church, and a lot of fun!
Elaine Cadogan will be calling people for the sales desk and Karen Delano will be calling people to help set up. The date for the set up is Saturday, April 30th at 9:30 am. Anna Maude will be calling for refreshments for the Junior reception, May 5th and the reception after the Black Sea Combo performance on May 7th.
With thanks, the Art Show Committee
News from our Cooperative Religious Education Program
We have some very special Sundays ahead of us for May. We will be finishing our Bibleodeon sessions and celebrating the Children and Religious Education (RE) on RE Sunday, May 15th.
May 1 We will explore Women and Mothers in the Bible and begin to review all the Bible stories we have learned about so far. We will do art projects and think up ideas for our Children’s/RE Sunday.
May 8 Happy Mothers Day! We will take a special collection for the Children’s Pantry of food items children can give to or make for their Moms. We will also continue to review the year and practice for the following Sunday which is . . .
Children’s/RE Sunday.
May 15 We will get the chance to learn from the children as they share with us all they have learned in RE this year. We will also thank all the wonderful teachers and helpers.
May 22 Cemetery Flags. We will have a multi-generational service at the High Street Cemetery the week before Memorial Day. We will replace the veterans’ flags with new ones.
May 29 Memorial Day. We will do an art project related to Memorial Day.
As we move into the end of the year, it is time to think about what we will do in RE next year. Sunday School happens along the same calendar as public school. We will go over ideas for next year with the children in June. We would love to hear from parents too. So, please let us know what you would like your children to be learning in RE.
Blessings,
